Description
Snake plant is also called Mother in law’s tongue probably because of its sharp-edged leaves. This plant is the ultimate in lazy person’s landscaping. It’s drought tolerant so you don’t have to water it very often. It’s also easy to care for – ignore it for a few weeks and it will be fine. Plus, it’s air purifying houseplants so it will help keep your home healthy and fresh. The bright yellow stripes that enhance the rigid, dark green, tapered sword-like leaves make them perfect for sprucing up small spaces.
Note: The plant comes in nursery/grow pot.
Detailed Care Guide
Sunlight: This plant is likely to survive any light conditions. Direct sun or indirect light or partial shade. Will show best growth in indirect light.
Water: Water the plant twice a month. Let the soil dry out between waterings. During winters, water the plant once a month. This plant can survive underwatering but is intolerant to overwatering.
Pet-Friendly: The plant is not pet-friendly.
Humidity: This plant is not particularly sensitive to humidity, but it prefers drier environments.
Temperature: The plant prefers warm conditions. Maintain the temperature between 70°F-90°F for maximum growth. It cannot tolerate temperatures below 50°F.
Fertilizer: Feed the plant every two months during the growing season using a mild, balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength. You can also use a slow-release fertilizer. Do not overfeed the plant.
Repotting: Snake plants prefer to be a little root bound. This means you don't have to worry about repotting your plant yearly. However, when the roots become visible at the top of the soil or start growing out of the pot's bottom drainage holes, repot. Use a well-draining potting mix, preferably a mixture of potting mix and perlite.
Common Problems
Root rot: This plant can tolerate underwatering but overwatering this plant can cause severe problems like root rot. Rotted roots will cause the leaves to droop or bend and eventually fall off. To prevent your snake plant from dying, never overwater the plant. Always check the soil between waterings and water only when it is completely dry.
Brown tips: Brown crispy tips of the snake plant means that it is underwater. Although the plant can survive under watered conditions, it still needs some watering. Ideally, you need to water the plant twice a month. The plant doesn't care if you remove those brown spots; they are dead areas and will not hurt.
